Raditude (2009) Album Review

Before I begin, I would just like to state for the purpose of full disclosure that I am the biggest Weezer fan ever. I have listened to the Blue album, Pinkerton, maladroit, the Green Album, and the Red Album to the point that every song is burnt into my brain. If you noticed I excluded Make Believe, its because Make Believe sucked balls.

When I heard Weezer was releasing their newest album (Raditude) a little more than a year after the Red Album I was surprised, because Weezer normally takes a two or three years to write and record a new CD. This obviously made me a little worried becuase last time Weezer rushed a release it was Maladroit, which was a good record, just didn't feel polished. Sadly my fears have been proven right. Raditude is in my opinion the second worst Weezer album ever (Make Believe sucks so much balls nothing could be worse).

The writing in this album is frustrating to say the least. Cuomo one of my favorite song writers, but with this album things just seem to fall flat, explode into a million little pieces, then vomit out blood. Only 3 listenable songs on the album, and only one I would call good. That good song is the first single (If your wondering, If I Want You To) I Want You To which sounds like a Weezer song. The other two, I'm Your Daddy and Put Me Back Together are okay songs just lack the quality of writing that is normally found in a Weezer album.

The music on this album is okay, I was really shocked that there were no leads. Weezer in my opinion has great leads for the genre of alt rock, so why no leads? That is the big question about Raditude "Where did the balls go?" Looking past the problem of no leads the music together is very average for an alternative band so I cant say much more beyond that point.

To recap, The Red album feels thrown together washed up and boring from a band that feels like they have more hits under their belt. I just pray that there is some time spent to refelect and write before the next Weezer record comes out. I give Raditude 2 stars out of 5

Sorry for Partyin (2009) Album Review

I love it when a band can consistently release good albums, this is no different with the band behind 2009's Sorry For Partyin'. Bowling For Soup reached near musical perfection with their 2006 album The Great Burrito Extortion Case, and Sorry for Partyin' is equally as good as The Great Burrito Extortion Case. So lets dig into this delicious feast of a CD.
With lyrics written mostly by Jaret Reddick and Linus of Hollywood, I have to say this is the single best written BFS album. A Strong beginning, middle, and end with only one song I didn't like Love Goes Boom, only because I am still recovering from Say Anythings self titled (god that album makes me depressed). I really do love everything about the writing on this album, every song feels like it could have been off of any other BFS album while still feeling original and evolved.

while the power pop genre isn't known for amazing music, Sorry for Partyin' has a pretty damn good melody. Mixing electronic, flamingo, and even polka, Sorry for Partyin' has an amazing variety of music used. Really Cool Dance Song is my favorite song due to its resemblance to all the crap dance music that has been popular recently, except this song is good!

To conclude, I have to say Sorry for Partyin' is an amazing album from an amazing band. It deserves much praise for its solid lyrics and melody. All of these factors combined make me have to give Bowling For Soups Sorry for Partyin' 5 stars out of 5

Say Anything (2009) Album Review

I have always been a huge fan of the emo genre so when I read a review about Say Anything (one of my favorite bands) releasing an emo/dance/religious album I wasn't so sure I'd like it, but The album was actually okay. The best way to describe this self title is 1/3 of a good emo album 1/3 of a crappy emo album and 1/3 of I am not to sure what it is. This CD starts off good with strong tracks like Hate Everyone and Fed to Death but slowly gets repetitive, with a lyric in Mara and Me alluding to the fact that they cannot write the same song over again.

Lyrically I will say this is say anythings best album. Its religious, but not preaching, more cathartic than anything. This album is hard to listen to if you pay to close to the lyrics, which are depressing and dark as can be. I will say this, if ...Is a Real Boy was to dark of an album for you to listen to in one sitting don't even go near this self title.

The music behind the lyrics is what kills this album. The same melody repeated and chord progression repeating over and over and over again, with very few changes made. It sounds like every song is ripped off of previous Say Anything albums. It gets so bad I just skipped songs and read the lyrics online.

Overall this album is not Say Anything's best. Strong lyrics and a great concept bogged down by repetitive melody and overt depression keep this from being a buy, I will say that you should go on itunes and buy the first 5 tracks and listen to the rest on myspace. Say Anything's Self Titled gets a 3 out of 5

I'll leave you with the music video for the first single Hate Everyone.

Zombieland Text review

Every now and then that rare comedy movie comes along, that one that is nearly perfect in every way. One that doesn't have to rely on gross out humor and sex for every joke. Zombieland is that movie.

The cast is just fantastic, the main and pretty much only cast consists of; Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus the cowardly main protagonist, Woody Harrelson is Tallahassee, the rebellious loner without a cause, Emma Stone plays the romantic lead Wichita, and rounding up the cast Abigail Breslin as the spunky Little Rock. Altogether this cast is amazing, the way Harrelson and Eisenberg play off each other makes for a perfect comedic duo, but when Breslin and Stone enter the movie it just makes it a wonderful combination of dry, witty, and well timed humor. The best timing out of everyone is Breslin, who I have always thought was amazing since Little Miss Sunshine.

The writing and direction is amazing the only minor flaws I have were with the audio editing. The movies audio seems like I did it. In areas where dubbing was needed it was obvious and some areas that didn't need dubbing got it.

The Story is also amazing. It makes a believable world that zombies exiest in and a great origin story for the zombie apocalypse. The way the characters interact feels real its not, forced at all. The writing was just so good it makes other dramatic zombie movies seem like crap. The best way to describe the story is, every road trip, buddy movie, and romantic comedy put together in a dark world of zombies and death.

If you couldn't tell from the rest of this review I loved this movie. If I could I would go off and marry this movie. Just go and watch it now. The only thing keeping this movie from a 100% is the audio editing, I give this movie a 99%

Plain White T's the next Beatles?

Before you leave a comment or rate read this. This is all my personal opinions about the music industry and musical tastes. I am just sending my opinion out, If you don't like my opinion please post your own. Now lets begin this blog about the way the music industry is moving and heading.

The Plain White T's are a band that I do like, I am not thesuperomegazomfgfanboy, but I think they make good music.Someone left a comment on youtube today that made me think about the Plain White T's. "idk y but TO ME they? are like a new generation of the beatles" on the song 1234 by Plain White T's. Now why would some dumb probably teenage girls comment get me thinking you ask? Well it got me thinking about other bands being called the new generation of Beatles one being The...Jonas Brothers *sigh*. That got me thinking will there be another Beatles ever? A band bigger than Jesus that everyone likes. Also What candidates are there for such a position.

A few bands I could think of that could accurately be compared to the Beatles would be the Backstreet Boy, The Shins, Foo Fighters, and hell even The Plain White T's. All four represent something the Beatles were. Weather it be the Backstreet Boys for making teenage girls hearts flutter, The Shins for writing trippy songs you can get high off of, the Foo Fighters for breaching an artistic medium in music that was missing, or The Plain White T's for solid song writing that has emotional connections in every lyric.

When it comes down to it can anyone compare? The Beatles were the rare band that could write their own music that could stand for a political cause while reaching an emotional boundary deep within. I wish that was still around but unless John Lennon comes back as a zombie it doesn't look likely. At least we have bands that can help fill the void of the greatest band.

Maybe 10 years from now we will look at the Plain White T's and go wow they were the second incarnation of the Beatles. For now we can just sit back and listen to what comes our way.

Revolution of the Mask Issue #1 Text Review

After a near 6 month hiatus from me doing text reviews of comic books I decided I would review a comic book reviewers comic book. The Revolution of the Mask art by Leonardo Freites and story by Lewis "Linkara" Lovhaug.

To start off lets talk about the artwork. The style is black and white which if done right can be gritty or beautiful, in this case its done okay my biggest issue with the black and white is the shading something that is a slight problem in this book. The textures just don't show up as good as they should which can be a real down point. What I do like is the character design, a mix between silver age comics and manga . The mix between what is known as an anime template and the classic DC style really adds some interesting eye candy .

The Story is an interesting thing to talk about. It is a good story but seems so brief even for only one issue of twelve. The Story is great for how little is really exposed, which is a good thing. There is a slight homage to V for Vendetta, and the waking up to a world that has always been around you that you never noticed does seem a little like Wanted. The story is good id even say great, but it didnt do the little extra to make it amazing.

To summarize, the first issue would be good for a vet in the industry, but it came from two people who have never published a book professionally before. The fact that the first issue was this good gives me high expectations for what is to come. While I do think the illustration needs work and the story isn't word heavy enough I would have to give this book a solid 85% for the first issue. Well worth the digital download price.

Watchmen Movie Review

After my review of the graphic novel you knew this was coming.

The first area I want to talk about is the cast. The main cast is Billy Crudup (DR. Manhattan) Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl) Malin Akerman (Silk Specter) Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) and Matthew Goode (Ozymandias). I have a few problems with the cast such as THE FACT THAT Malin Akerman CANNOT ACT, Jackie Earle Haley's voice can be a bit to crackly, and Matthew Goode's inability to show emotion when needed.

Another point I want to touch on is the cinematography. While this movie is literally dark you can make stuff out usually and its not depressingly dark. The green screen works with the actors while never seems out of place. The best piece of film comes from the intro where it combines slow motion shooting with exposition in the background and foregrounds of the environments.

The script has flaws a perfections. The positive's are how true it stays to the graphic novel, The great dialog(sometimes misdelivered by Malin), and the character development. There are really only two negatives I can think of the lack of moral ambiguity and the love scenes that were just there to say WE ARE R-RATED SCREW YOU BATMAN.

-----------------Spoilers IF you haven't read the comic book or dont want to know the changed ending-----------------------------
The ending is better in the movie then it is in the GN. The ending is changed to make people think that Dr. Manhattan is the worlds new enemy thus the world unites way better then the RETARDED OCTOPUS in new york i mean wouldn't Russia just think we were faking if the Octopus was only in New York. I think the world would be more likely to unite if they thought Dr. Manhattan was watching them like an overlord.
-------SPOILER ENDS---------

Altogether I have to say this is a GREAT Superhero movie better then the overrated Dark Night don't take your kids unless they like blood and blue penises but besides that altogether I recommend this movie to everyone except kids under 11 (sorry no blue penis for you). I give this movie a 96%

Watchmen Graphic Novel review

It was about November 2008 when I heard about Watchmen for the very first time, It was on G4 (I know I watch G4 still but I wished I lived in Canada so I could watch G4 Tech TV) Attack of the Show was exclaiming and raving over this as if it was a master piece of art and fiction and how they were anticipating the theatrical release based upon said graphic novel. Another two months passed and I was sitting down watching one of my nightly shows when I watched the first real trailer for Watchmen. Needless to say I was amazed by it. One more month passed and I decided I could no longer wait to see the movie but no pirated or otherwise versions were out there, so I read the graphic novel even though I am not a comic book fan. This is my review of the Watchmen graphic novel.

1986's Watchmen focuses on the idea of what if superheroes were real? What Events would be changed in world history? Where would we be? It answers these questions in this epic 411 page graphic novel full of dark, gritty, and sometimes disturbing moments.

The story follows the exploits of former "Masked Adventurers" (some still active) as they try to stop World War 3. This book rivals Tom Clancy's stories of conspiracy while maintaining a a love story the likes of which no soap opera or teen drama could even come close to.

This finely wrapped package of drama, action, fear, life, and a million and one other things combined is aided by the use of in universe news articles, scrap books, books, and documents teaching you about how the world got where it was. One of my favorite quotes from the novel is from the fake book Dr. Manhattan Super-Powers and Superpowers; I never said, "The superman exists, and he's American." What I said was,"God exists, and he's American."

On the subject of this book looking like fine art I cant agree more. Artist Dave Gibbons manages to make a dark world that isn't to dark and dreary to be off putting. The character design is probably the best I have seen in a long time. If you look in the backgrounds you can truly see the amazement about how much you can learn of the universe of watchmen just by looking around. My favorite drawing in the book is Archie Nite owls aircraft/submarine/awesome mobile. One last thing to comment on in the art direction taken are the panels from Tales of the Black Freighter just excellent is all I can say.

The next person to talk about is Alan Moore famed writer of Watchmen. Moore is single handedly responsible for creating the dark age (named that way for two reasons) with Watchmen and ending it via Youngblood Judgment Day, Leading way for the modern age of comics. With watchmen Moore created a story so excellent and well rounded it launched most of today's newer comic book writers. My opinion is that the story is amazing the only issues I have is that at some points near the end you don't get enough development near the end as if he was rushed. Some minor grammatical slips happen in a few issues but nothing to bad. I loved when Dr. Manhattan is on Mars and he tells is story it sounds so...haunting so...dark so...amazing.

I am overwhelmed by how good this Graphic Novel is. I recommend you buy it now hell I recommend you buy 10 copies and give the other 9 to your friends and family its worth a read if you are a comic book fan or just a fan of good literature altogether. I give Watchmen a 97%
